Where to Get your Moving Boxes

selling moving boxes

Moving boxes are corrugated cardboard boxes in which you pack your household or office belongings when relocating. These boxes are costly and many people instead look for good quality used boxes. If you have just moved and are unlikely to move again in the foreseeable future, you can get back some of the money you spent in buying the boxes.

Even if the boxes you bought were used, you can still sell them if they are usable at least once more. There are many ways to dispose of your used moving boxes and recoup between 15-50% of what you paid. In addition to the money, reselling used boxes is good for the environment.

Selling Options

The following are some viable options for you to dispose of your used moving boxes:

  • Neighbors, friends, colleagues: Look around, somebody you know might be planning a move. Find out if they are interested in buying your used boxes. Of course, your boxes should be in good shape. As for your asking price, you should not ask for the same price that you paid, but you can recover even 25-35% of what you paid and save someone you know a lot of money.
  • Online: The internet is an ideal platform to sell your moving boxes. Here are a number of online selling options for your used moving boxes:
    1. www.usedcardboardboxes.com: Boomerang Boxes offers a ‘box rescue, resell, and recycle’ services. They buy used boxes from businesses that receive large numbers of boxes (such as supermarkets and stores), but are open to buying from end-users too.
    2. www.craigslist.org: You can post a free ad on Craigslist, choosing the city or state where it will be convenient for you to deliver your boxes. Craigslist is a network of online urban communities featuring free advertisements of a wide range of products and services in different American cities (as well as cities in 54 other countries).
    3. www.ebay.com: The world’s biggest online market, eBay provides you with a robust platform to sell anything. You have to register yourself as a seller in a process that takes a few minutes. You must provide details of your boxes – size, weight limit, a brief history of use, etc. You must also specify whether you will deliver anywhere in the US or within a particular city or state. You have to state your price and specify the shipping cost. The best thing about eBay is that once an order is placed, they will receive the payment and will pass it on to you after deducting their commission (usually 15).

You need to live by your promised delivery date and the boxes you sell must comply with your claimed quality: any negative comment from the buyer could embarrass you and even debar you from future selling through eBay. Look at other postings of moving boxes on eBay and price your boxes competitively.

    4. www.google.com/products or www.froogle.com: You can post a sale offer on this portal for free. You can also upload pictures of your boxes. Moving boxes are not yet a popular item sold on this site, but you can try. The company behind this portal is Google and you can expect some vigorous marketing.
    5. www.moversDirectory.com: This might be your last choice because these companies are middlemen and will add their own profit margin to sell the boxes to their end-customers. This means you will therefore have to reduce your price expectations. Go for smaller moving companies because the bigger ones may not be much interested in just a few boxes, which is what you most probably have to give them.

Getting rid of your used moving boxes makes sense economically. The boxes you have must be of good quality and usable at least once again. There are lots of people in your own city, if not neighborhood, planning to move home or office who are looking for boxes. Take the time to look around and find out where you can sell your moving boxes.
